The Ferrari steering wheel and steering column assembly 879116 is an OEM component used within the 458 Italia and 488 GTB (F142 platform) steering system. It refers to the steering column structure that connects the steering wheel assembly to the steering rack input shaft, including mechanical and electronic interfaces depending on specification.

OEM Part Overview

• Part number: 879116
• Type: Steering column / steering wheel carrier assembly (platform-specific configuration)
• Application:
  • Ferrari 458 Italia / Spider / Speciale
  • Ferrari 488 GTB / Spider
• Platform: F142 (458 → 488 evolution family)
• Position: Between steering wheel and steering rack system

Function

The steering column assembly performs several critical roles:

• Transfers driver steering input from the wheel to the steering rack
• Houses collapsible safety structure for crash protection
• Provides mounting for steering wheel and control electronics
• Integrates steering angle sensing (for stability control systems)
• Supports column adjustment mechanisms (tilt/telescope depending on spec)

System Integration

The 879116 steering column works with:

• Steering wheel assembly (controls, paddles, airbag module)
• Steering angle sensor (input for ESC and traction systems)
• Steering rack (hydraulic assist system on 458 / 488 GTB)
• Body control and stability systems (ABS/ESC/Manettino logic)

It acts as the mechanical and electronic interface between driver input and chassis response.
